Grid
A grid-connected solar power system works seamlessly with the existing utility grid and will try to meet the load demand. The addition of a battery-backup allows the system to maintain a balance of production and demand. The solar systems production depends on the availability of sunlight.
When production exceeds demand, the excess power can be used to charge the batteries, which store the electricity. When the system is producing less electricity than demanded by the home or businesses it will still have the ability to draw from the grid.
Some grid tie systems are used purely for saving power during daylight hours with specific types of inverters and others have specific types of inverters which are both grid tie and they charge batteries for night time backup.

Off Grid
